The Trust was founded in 2008 by our founder chair late Mr Nurul Islam (A student leader during language movement, a freedom fighter, Fellow of Bangla Academy, and writer of The Probashir Kotha & The Sojourner to Settlers).
The land was gifted to the Trust by Mr Nurul. Setting up a library for the South Surma was his childhood dream. Most of the current stock of the library is his own personal collection over last 60 years.
Being another great believer in library movement Late Mr M A Muhith, Honourable Finance Minister of Bangladesh laid the foundation for the primary library building in October 2015. The construction of the primary library building was completed by the Trust in late 2015.
Mr M A Muhith opened the primary library building on 6th August 2016.
The Trust submitted a project proposal in late 2016 to both Ministry of Finance and later Ministry of Cultural Affairs (Department of Public Libraries) to develop a multi storied library building to serve the people of South Surma. After a rigorous process of suitability, design & layout analysis, and soil test by Public Works Department (PWD) for nearly one and half year the project secured the approval from Ministry of Finance in late 2017. At the request of the South Surma Public Library Trust, Sylhet Zila Parishad was appointed as the Project Manager in 2019 who has completed the construction of the library building in June 2021.
Since the completion of the library building the Trust has carried out and financed all aspects of landscaping, boundary and internal furnishing works and completed the project in July 2022.
